Nutrition & Oral Health

What you eat and drink plays a bigger role in your dental health than most people realize.

How Diet Affects Your Teeth

Every time you eat or drink something sugary or starchy, the bacteria in your mouth produce acid that attacks your enamel for a period afterward. It's not just how much sugar you eat, but how often — frequent snacking and sipping throughout the day gives your teeth less time to recover between acid attacks than eating the same amount at fewer sittings.

Foods That Support Healthy Teeth

Foods high in calcium and phosphorus, like dairy, nuts, and leafy greens, help support strong enamel. Crunchy fruits and vegetables can help clean your teeth naturally as you chew, and they stimulate saliva, which helps neutralize acid. Drinking plenty of water, especially if it's fluoridated, also supports your teeth throughout the day.

Foods and Habits to Limit

Sugary and starchy snacks, sticky candies that cling to teeth, and frequent sipping on soda, juice, or sports drinks are some of the biggest contributors to cavities. Acidic drinks, including some sparkling waters and citrus juices, can also soften enamel over time. You don't have to eliminate these entirely — just being mindful of frequency, and rinsing with water afterward, goes a long way.
