What a Crown Does
A crown is a custom-made cap that fits completely over a tooth, restoring its shape, strength, and function. Crowns are typically recommended for teeth with large fillings that have failed, teeth that are cracked or fractured, teeth following a root canal, or teeth that are badly worn down. Rather than replacing the tooth, a crown reinforces what's left of it.
What to Expect
Getting a crown usually takes two visits. At the first, I prepare the tooth, take an impression, and place a temporary crown while your permanent one is made. At the second visit, I remove the temporary and cement the permanent crown in place, checking your bite to make sure it feels natural.
Caring for a Crown
A crown is durable but not indestructible — treat it much like a natural tooth, avoiding ice chewing or using your teeth as tools. Regular brushing, flossing, and checkups keep both the crown and the tooth underneath it healthy. With good care, a well-fitted crown can last many years.
